New obstetrician/gynecologist now practising in the city

FORT SASKATCHEWAN — Local residents now have increased access to obstetrical and gynecological care with the arrival of a newly-recruited physician, now practising at Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital.

Dr. Olusegun Oyewole, a Canadian fellowship-trained obstetrician and gynecologist, will be providing care at the hospital and the Ross Creek Medical Clinic. He was recruited through the ongoing efforts of Alberta Health Services (AHS) and its community partners.

He will be leading improvements to the hospital’s women’s health program, including the addition of procedures not previously available at the facility.

“Women’s and maternal health is a priority for our government,” says Sarah Hoffman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “I’m pleased that Dr. Oyewole and his wife will be serving the community of Fort Saskatchewan and its residents.”

Hospital site director Heather Durstling says Dr. Oyewole is a welcome addition to the facility.

“The Women’s Health Program is committed to increasing access to enhanced care to local residents,” says Durstling. “Adding Dr. Oyewole to our care team means more women can access enhanced gynecology care and deliver their babies close to home rather than commuting to Edmonton.”

Dr. Oyewole recently arrived in Alberta from North Battleford, Sask., where he had an established practice for six years. His wife, Bolalanle, is a midwife who is working in Edmonton.

“Obstetrics has been my passion from my first year in medical school,” says Dr. Oyewole. “I’ve delivered thousands of babies and working in partnership with women throughout their pregnancy and in labour and delivery is a journey I love being a part of.”

Dr. Oyewole received his medical training in Nigeria, post-graduate family medicine training at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, post-graduate obstetric medical training in Ireland, and completed his Canadian fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Ottawa.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
