Construction begins on new EMS station in Wabasca

September 7, 2016

WABASCA – Construction of a new EMS station, near the Wabasca/Desmarais Healthcare Centre property, began this week and is scheduled for completion next summer.

Work is not expected to cause any disruptions to patient care, access to entrances, traffic or parking at the Alberta Health Services (AHS) facility.

“The new EMS station will help to better serve the community and surrounding area,” says Shelly Pusch, Chief Zone Officer for AHS North Zone. “It will allow EMS to deploy both of the town’s ambulances, and provide modern and comfortable lodging for EMS employees in one location.”

Staff, patients and visitors will start to notice on-site activity as work begins and fencing is set up near the Healthcare Centre property.

"Everyone benefits from reliable and timely emergency medical services, but they are especially vital to those living, working or travelling in more remote regions," says Sarah Hoffman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “This investment into a new EMS station in Wabasca is part of the government's commitment to help ensure that all Albertans have access to high-quality health services, regardless of where they live.”

The $3.1-million, four-bay EMS station project is being funded through the Government of Alberta’s Infrastructure Maintenance Program.

Alberta Health Services recognizes the temporary inconvenience that construction work can create and will regularly update the community on the project’s progress.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
