Residents invited to take the Winter Walk Day Challenge

January 26, 2017

SWAN HILLS – February 1 is Winter Walk Day in Alberta – and Alberta Health Services is encouraging Swan Hills residents to make it a city-wide event.

Walking is great for health, the environment, reducing traffic and building community. On Winter Walk Day, Albertans are invited to put on tuques and boots, hit the fresh air and walk by themselves or with friends, colleagues or family members for at least 15 minutes.

To enter the provincial competition, visit shapeab.com, or winterwalkday.ca.

Walk on your own or join us and community partners for a group walk, starting at the Keyano Centre parking lot at 11:30 a.m. After the walk, there will be free hot dogs and hot chocolate at the FCSS/Parent Link, sponsored by the Town of Swan Hills. For more information on the event, call 780-333-7077.

Participants are reminded to dress appropriately and be mindful of weather conditions. Keep extremities covered and warm, and wear shoes or boots that not only keep you dry but also have good grip, ankle support and a solid surface area (this means no high heels). You can also purchase ice “grippers” that slip over other footwear and provide additional traction.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
