Advisory council to focus on seniors and continuing care 

CALGARY – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is recruiting volunteer members for its new Provincial Advisory Council on Seniors and Continuing Care.

Volunteers will have an opportunity to provide a broad, system-wide perspective on seniors and continuing care services from across the province.

“Hearing from Albertans about the care, challenges and successes in continuing care settings will be vital to ensure we are continually improving upon the support and care we provide,” says Dr. Verna Yiu, AHS President and CEO. “It’s critical that AHS receive regular feedback from clients, families, communities and members of the Provincial Advisory Council. This will help shape continuing care for our future.”

The Provincial Advisory Council on Seniors and Continuing Care requires up to 15 volunteer members, all of whom are:

• Experienced and passionate about services related to seniors health and continuing care.
• Eager to engage with community members to get their feedback on what healthcare services are working well and where improvements can be made.
• Interested in participating in dialogue with AHS that will lead to creative solutions to healthcare services across Alberta.

AHS has two other Provincial Advisory Councils; one focused on cancer care, the other on addiction and mental health. Provincial Advisory Councils report to the AHS Board and meet four times per year at sites in Calgary and Edmonton. They work with AHS leadership and experts in the field to discuss health issues, needs and priorities, and promote and participate in activities that enhance the health of Albertans.

“Continuing care and seniors health continue to be incredibly important topics for Albertans,” says Dr. James Silvius, Provincial Medical Director for Seniors Health. “The creation of an advisory council led by passionate volunteers is an important link to ensure AHS is responsive to the concerns and needs of each community.”
