Volunteers needed to lead chronic disease sessions

May 31, 2019

EDMONTON – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is looking for volunteers to facilitate Better Choices, Better Health, a six-week series of workshops designed to support people living with chronic disease.

Offered by the AHS Alberta Healthy Living Program, these workshops are held for 2.5 hours a week for six weeks throughout the Edmonton area. They are led by two trained volunteer leaders, many of whom live with a chronic disease. This approach ensures an understanding of the challenges participants face and provides a supportive and welcoming environment. The program includes information on lifestyle changes, dealing with difficult emotions, developing communication skills, using medications, and working with healthcare teams.

AHS is looking to train volunteer workshop leaders who:

  • Have experience either living with a chronic health condition or are close to someone with a chronic health condition.
  • Have empathy for the needs and abilities of adults living with chronic health conditions.
  • Have good listening skills and are non-judgmental.
  • Are dependable and consistent; have reliable transportation and can commit to facilitating an entire six-week workshop with a co-facilitator.
  • Are comfortable speaking to groups of 10 to 15 participants.

Please contact program co-ordinator Christina Lucente at 780-735-1080 for further information and registration forms.
