Online directory provides continuing care facility information

June 11, 2019

CALGARY – Albertans now have the ability to explore and learn more about continuing care facilities across the province – all from the comfort of home.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has developed an online facility directory with comprehensive information on all of the province’s 345 publicly-funded continuing care facilities. This new online tool is designed to simplify the process of finding a care home when one is needed. Directory information will be updated every six months.

“For many clients and families, there has not been a single source of information when it comes to continuing care facilities in Alberta. It can be challenging to decide where to live, especially if someone cannot travel and tour the facilities in person,” says Max Jajszczok, Executive Director of Seniors Health for AHS. “The continuing care facility directory provides a good resource when exploring options, as well as for current residents and families looking for more information about their own facility.”

In the directory, found at ahs.ca/continuingcare, each continuing care facility has its own page, detailing information specific to that location, including:

  • Services and available amenities.
  • Accommodation charges
  • Information about quality and standards, such as resident and family experience survey and audit outcomes.
  • Photos, maps and contact information to help with the decision process.

The web page also contains information about all publicly-funded continuing care services in Alberta, such as home care or palliative and end-of-life services.

The facility directory was developed over the past year in response to requirements of the Long Term Care Information Act. Work on the directory was guided by feedback and ideas from a variety of stakeholders, including the Government of Alberta, continuing care operators, client and family advisors, and advisory councils.

There are more than 25,800 publicly-funded continuing care spaces in Alberta. Approximately 7,900 people moved into an AHS continuing care facility in 2017/18.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
