Events to mark World Suicide Prevention Day

LETHBRIDGE – Sept. 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day, an internationally recognized event designed to raise awareness and to strengthen commitment and action to prevent suicide. It brings communities and organizations together in efforts to save lives.

Suicide affects people of all genders, ages and ethnicities. Every year, more Albertans die by suicide than motor vehicle collisions. Throughout Alberta many communities are taking part in activities to create awareness around suicide. On Sept. 10, these events include:

Lethbridge:

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lethbridge Public Library, 810 5 Ave. S.:
  The Community Interagency Suicide Prevention Council is hosting a free event that includes a psychologist’s approach to dealing with hopelessness, a perspective from an emergency department nurse, a history of suicide prevention in southern Alberta, and a message from a bereaved spouse. Light lunch will be provided.

Medicine Hat:

• 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Veiner Centre, 225 Woodman Ave. S.E.:
  Rock the Park is a chance for the community to come together and paint rocks with messages of hope that will show support for those in distress. Supplies will be provided and all ages are welcome to get involved.

Help is available. Albertans can access mental health services and supports at AHS sites across the province. AHS is committed to providing better access to support for those experiencing thoughts of suicide and for survivors grieving a loss due to suicide.
