- 11:40am – 1:50pm, peaking around 12:40pm
What & Where
On Monday, April 8, the shadow of the moon will pass over Canada during a solar eclipse. This occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, culminating with the moon fully or partially blocking the sun. A solar eclipse allows us to see the sun’s tenuous atmosphere — the corona — glowing around the moon.
For Canadians, the path the moon is taking means that people living in some cities and towns in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland will be treated to a total solar eclipse. People outside the path of totality will be able to observe a partial solar eclipse, during which only a portion of the sun is hidden by the moon.
Safety Tips
- Never look directly at the sun without proper protection.
- Use properly made solar viewers, as known as ‘eclipse glasses’ that meet the international standard ISO 12312-2. They will be made with a special-purpose solar filter that allows you to safely view the sun through them.
- Be sure to inspect your solar filter before use; discard the item if you notice any scratches or damage.
- Make sure to supervise children using solar filters.
- Do not remove your solar filter while looking at the sun. Turn your face away, then remove the solar filter from your face.
- Do not view the sun through a camera, binoculars or any other device — the concentrated solar rays will damage your eyes, and could cause serious injury.
