Professional practice signifies a shared commitment between providers and leaders to excellence. It integrates ethical care for patients and families, evidence-based decision making, continuous self-improvement and collaborative flexibility. Professional practice thrives through collaborative decision making and a network of supports for providers and leaders.
Professional practice expectations are vital to providing safe, quality, patient- and family-centred care. Professional Practice in Action guides healthcare providers in understanding what is expected of them in their practice and leaders in how they can best support providers.
Professional practice councils nurture and grow our professional communities. Representing the voices of ten diverse disciplines, the councils promote collaboration; create and provide evidence-informed best practice guidance, consultation and professional development; and set the standard for innovative healthcare practices.
We believe that by optimizing practice at a system and an individual level, we can achieve optimized outcomes for Albertans through cost-effective and efficient service.
Optimized Practice and Outcomes is an integrated approach that helps us identify the services, practice guidance and staff development needed to meet patient and population needs with the evidence and resources we have available.
Optimized Practice & Outcomes consists of multiple overlapping initiatives:
The Allied Health Professions team works in partnerships to advance evidence-informed education for allied health providers. Our goal is to enhance professional development, promote best practice, and synthesize knowledge to help providers build key skills and competencies. In turn, we reduce variation in clinical practice, leading to better quality care.
A welcoming and informative orientation and onboarding experience to AHS for both students and new staff.
Resources and opportunities to help providers to meet core competency expectations and expand their professional development.
Education help allied health to progress in clinical and other career streams.

Research drives improvement in clinical practice and outcomes. In AHS, we encourage our providers to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities to conduct AHS-relevant research through the Research Challenge — a program that helps build capacity for research and evidence-informed practices.
The program enables providers to conduct small-scale research projects with resources and support from a mentor and senior practice leads.
