Five Safes Framework

To better serve the research community, Cancer Advanced Analytics (Cancer Care Alberta) has implemented the internationally recognized Five Safes Framework. This approach ensures that data disclosure is safe, secure, and compliant with the Health Information Act and Alberta Heath Services standards, while meeting the evolving needs of researchers.

The implementation of the Five Safes Framework reflects our commitment to improving and standardizing data request processes. By adopting this structured approach, we aim to enhance transparency, data security and accessibility, ensuring that all requests are managed consistently and effectively.

In collaboration with AHS Data & Analytics and the Health System Access teams, we have developed guidance on best practices for requesting and accessing data based on the Five Safes model. This model evaluates data requests across five dimensions: Safe Projects, Safe Data, Safe People, Safe Settings, and Safe Outputs. Adhering to these guidelines will expedite the review process and streamline data release.
