Staying Active with Kidney Disease

Being active is important when you have kidney disease. Exercise can help you stay strong, healthy, and feel better every day.

Alberta Kidney Care offers safe exercise programs to help you improve your fitness and quality of life.

A kinesiologist is a member of your healthcare team. They can help you stay active safely and create an exercise plan that is right for you.

A kinesiologist can help you:

  • Stay as healthy as possible while living with kidney disease or other health conditions
  • Build your strength and improve your fitness
  • Get your body ready for a kidney transplant
  • Make everyday activities easier
  • Manage pain
  • Return to your usual activities after a hospital stay
  • Develop healthy exercise habits that can last a lifetime

Working with a kinesiologist can help you keep moving, feel stronger, and improve your overall well-being.

Your nurse or kidney doctor can arrange a visit with a Kinesiologist, either in person or virtually.

What to Expect

During your first visit, you will meet with a kinesiologist and complete an assessment. This helps us make sure exercise is safe for you and understand your current fitness level.

Your kinesiologist will use this information to create a personalized exercise plan based on your needs and goals.

If you receive hemodialysis, a kinesiologist may visit you during your treatment to talk about simple ways to be active while on dialysis or at home. You can also ask a member of your healthcare team to refer you to a kinesiologist.

See below to learn more about the programs and services we offer.

Services Offered

  • Personalized home exercise program
  • Cycling while on dialysis
  • Weekly small group virtual exercise classes (Zoom)
  • Loaner bike program
