Postgraduate Overview

Through our partnerships with the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, AHS Medical Affairs facilitates the placement of post-graduate physician trainees across Alberta.

This includes:

  • 1700 Resident Physicians (learners in accredited residency training programs)
  • 200 Clinical Fellows (advanced trainees and international learners not eligible for certification in Canada)
  • 800 visiting trainees, annually

AHS Medical Affairs is primarily responsible for professional credentials verification, clinical access provisioning, and administering the human resources transactions (including payroll) of the Resident Physicians’ Agreement.

Starting Training

As our academic mandate is delivered through our university partnerships, registration starts with either:

The residency/fellowship training program is the first point of contact for coordinating registration; the University will initiate the placement process with Medical Affairs.  Eligible Resident Physicians & Clinical Fellows must satisfy AHS’ minimum requirements in advance of their clinical placement, including:

NOTE:  Individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents may require a work permit.

Medical Affairs provides access and instructions directly to new postgraduate trainees after the minimum requirements have been satisfied.

Trainees are invited to complete the online orientation modules in advance of their placement (additional information and instructions will become available as part of the onboarding process and through AHS’s internal website):

Looking For Practice Opportunities

New and soon-to-be graduates will find all job opportunities with Alberta Health Services on Doctor Jobs Alberta.

If selected for an opportunity with AHS, Medical Affairs will help coordinate the Medical Staff Appointment Application and effort will be made to transition clinical access with minimal interruption.

An orientation module is available for new independent practitioners:

  1. Visit http://ahs.icomproductions.ca/includes/modules/FM_ngLogin/#medical  and click “Register” to set-up an account.
  2. Complete all fields and click “Register Now”. You will automatically be logged into the system and will receive a confirmation email that restates the web address, your username, and your password.
  3. Wait a moment for the page to load and you should see the orientation module listed. Select the module and “Launch Course”.

Note: the account is unique to this website and does not connect with any other AHS network account.  Hold onto your login information so you can return to the website for future reference. Make sure pop-ups are not blocked by your browser.  As well, always use the Exit button located within the learning module to leave the session and save your progress.
