The DON SCN has developed 3 brief online learning modules to support sites in the implementation of the Bariatric Friendly Hospital initiative. The goal of these 3 courses are to increase professional competency, and support staff to work effectively and compassionately with patients with obesity. The modules were sequenced following the change principles of ADKAR.

This brief online learning module will support health care providers to become more knowledgeable about the complexity of obesity and its multiple causes.

Weight bias generally refers to negative attitudes toward a person because he or she has obesity, and can be manifested in different ways, leading to prejudice and discrimination. Weight bias prevents healthcare providers from delivering optimal care, and negatively impacts the patient’s experience in the hospital. This brief online learning module will support health care providers to become more knowledgeable about weight bias or obesity stigma, and its impact on quality care. It will also support healthcare providers to build weight sensitivity.

Regardless of the cause of a patient’s obesity, health care providers are able to give patients with obesity the best care when they have an understanding of the complex clinical needs of the patient. This brief online learning module will support healthcare providers to be more knowledgeable about some of the unique care needs of patients with obesity.
