See refocusing update on transfers, join town hall today

As refocusing continues, about 4,365 positions have been identified to transfer from Alberta Health Services (AHS) to Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) and Primary Care Alberta (PCA) effective July 1. Positions moving to ALA include the Provincial Seniors Health and Continuing Care team, the Continuing Care funding team, and the team in CPSM that supports continuing care contracting. Positions moving to PCA include parts of public health, aspects of chronic disease management and some Indigenous wellness.

These transfers will enable AHS to focus on being a leading hospital service provider, with shorter emergency and surgical wait times, and improved acute care capacity and flow. Read more about refocusing on Insite.

Interim AHS President and CEO Andre Tremblay will host an all-staff town hall today at 1 p.m. to share more information and answer questions. You can join using this link. Read more.

See wildfire updates and resources

Last weekend, AHS completed the safe return of evacuated acute care patients and long-term care residents to Redwater Health Centre. On May 7, in response to wildfire activity in the area, AHS and its EMS partners temporarily evacuated patients and residents from the facility to healthcare centres in Athabasca, Jasper, Whitecourt, Edson and Hinton. Our teams continue to ensure displaced individuals, especially those with ongoing health conditions, get the compassionate care and support they need. AHS teams work in collaboration with Alberta Wildfire and affected municipalities.

For latest wildfire information and a list of supports, see 2025 Wildfire Updates and Resources. (All Albertans can also visit the Help in Tough Times webpage.) Supports are available 24/7 through the Employee and Family Assistance Program. Call the EFAP intake line at 1-877-273-3134. Physicians can contact the AMA Physician and Family Support Program, also a confidential 24/7 support line, at 1-877-SOS-4MDS.

Launch 2 of new staff scheduling system completed

This week AHS completed the second launch of the new staff scheduling system, MySchedule (powered by Infor WFM), in the Calgary Zone. Thanks to everyone for your hard work and flexibility throughout this launch. The third launch for the North, Edmonton, Central and South zones is scheduled for Aug. 25. Our previous scheduling system, Environment for Scheduling Personnel (ESP), is being discontinued by the vendor late this year.

This new system enables AHS to electronically schedule staff and manage staffing levels to ensure patients get the highest quality of care when and where they need it. It provides a wide range of information about timekeeping and shift swaps in a mobile friendly format, so you can schedule everything right from your phone. (Note: Not all staff use this system, so talk to your leader if you are unsure.)

Learn more about how this change will impact you and your team, including training available for Launch 3.

Helping heroes heal

Every day, Alberta’s first responders face danger, trauma and heartbreak to safeguard the lives, futures and well-being of Alberta’s families, communities and loved ones. That’s why it is important to honour their sacrifice by ensuring Alberta’s heroes don’t face their battles alone.

This is why the province is investing $1.5 million annually to support the mental health of first responders living with or at risk for post-traumatic stress injuries.

Detect early, stop cancer

The province is investing $5.5 million in cancer screening to improve early detection and ensure faster access to life-saving diagnosis and treatment.

Half of all people living in Alberta will have cancer during their lifetime. They deserve high-quality cancer care, including early detection. That’s why the province is extending the Alberta Lung Cancer Screening Program and providing grants to four organizations to improve access to cancer screening – particularly in rural, remote and Indigenous communities.
