Information pertaining to diagnostic work-up for patients and how to refer your patient to a cancer centre whether they are diagnosed with a new cancer or recurrence can be found below.
Diagnostic Work-up pathways for Breast Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, and Lymphoma can be found on the AHS Cancer Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) website.
If your patient requires a referral to a cancer centre due to a new cancer diagnosis, please search for "new cancer" on Alberta Referral Directory for the most up-to-date referral information and instructions. As cancer referral pathways are generated and updated, they will also be added to Alberta Referral Pathways.
Often people do not get their first consult at a cancer centre for a few weeks after their initial diagnosis. Many experience a great deal of uncertainty, distress and anxiety while waiting. Sharing ahs.ca/cancerdiagnosed with your patients can help. Resources include the Newly Diagnosed with Cancer book, and information about the cancer centres, special supports for young adults and Indigenous people, and more. You can print this one-page information sheet to share with your patients.
If your patient requires a referral to a cancer centre due to a cancer recurrence, please contact their treating oncologist or cancer centre.
Specific instructions broken down by cancer type, can also be found on Surveillance.
If the contact information for the patient's treating oncologist or cancer centre is not available, please search the patient's cancer type on Alberta Referral Directory.
If you have questions or suggestions about cancer patient education resources, or would like to request materials, please contact the Cancer Patient Education team at cancer.patiented@ahs.ca.
