What We Do

MOHs provide leadership and support to Provincial Population & Public Health and the five geographic Zone Public Health teams in identifying health needs and addressing current and emerging public health issues.

As clinical experts in public health and preventive medicine, MOHs direct responses to individual and population-level health issues, act as the voice of prevention within an integrated health system, and serve as medical consultants to physicians, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders.

MOHs work collaboratively with population and public health teams and partners to provide public health support to communities in Alberta, and prevention services across the continuum of health care delivery.

Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring the health status of people living in Alberta.
  • Identifying and addressing factors that affect population health.

  • Preparing for and responding to public health emergencies and disasters.
  • Developing and improving programs and services that prevent disease and injury.
  • Coordinating early detection and treatment through population-based cancer and newborn screening.
  • Communicating health information to community partners, decision-makers and the public.
