The Healthy Food Checker was originally hosted on the Healthy U website and was named the Healthy U Food Checker and is now available on the Alberta Health Services website.
With so many different kinds of foods available making healthy choices can be a challenge. Basic foods such as apples, oatmeal, lower fat milk and lean beef are easy to identify as healthy choices. However, foods are complex and contain many ingredients, which can make it harder to decide which ones to choose.
The Healthy Food Checker makes choosing healthy, nutrient-rich foods easier. It compares the nutrition information from a Nutrition Facts Table to the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines, and will put foods and drinks into one of three groups:
Choose Most Often
Choose Sometimes
Choose Least Often
The Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Adults and the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth help Albertans make healthier food and drink choices at home, at work and in public spaces like schools, child care centres and recreation centres.
