Construction of South Health Campus (SHC) began in August 2007 at Deerfoot Trail South and 196th Ave SE in Calgary. The first phase of South Health Campus will cost $1.3 billion. Alberta Health Services, Alberta Health and Wellness, Alberta Infrastructure and the SHC Citizen Advisory Team are working together on the project to identify capital needs and priorities, and ensure Albertans receive the very best health care facility.
The South Health Campus is the first health care project in Alberta to achieve the designation of a Gold Seal Managed Project. The Canadian Construction Association awards a Gold Seal to construction professionals in recognition of their excellence and ongoing professional development, and their years of experience and excellence.
When the South Health Campus is complete, it will apply for Silver Certification in the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building program. This will make SHC the first greenfield, major tertiary health care facility in Canada to achieve this LEED designation. A greenfield site is one that has literally been built from the ground up.
