GAIN-SS eLearning Module

Information for Health Professionals

The Global Appraisal of Individual Needs - Short Screener (GAIN-SS) is an instrument used for screening concurrent disorders. It quickly identifies adults and adolescents with possible internalizing or externalizing psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, trauma-related disorders), substance use disorders, or crime and violence problems. Once an area of concern is identified, decisions on further assessment or referral needs can be made.

This GAIN-SS eLearning module provides an overview of this instrument and how to administer, analyze and interpret the scoring results.

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be equipped to:

  • Explain the history, purpose, and domains of the GAIN-SS
  • Describe the elements within the GAIN-SS and the GAIN-SS Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Modified
  • Administer the GAIN-SS CAMH Modified
  • Analyze the scoring on the GAIN-SS CAMH Modified
  • Interpret the scoring on the GAIN-SS CAMH Modified
